Icknield Archaeology’s consultant Dr Jonathan Hunn recently assisted with a project to discover the course of the Roman road which linked the Roman city of St Albans with Cirencester (Fig. 1).

The route passed through the Bulbourne Valley in west Hertfordshire, but its precise course was not known. Following discussion with the Dacorum Heritage Trust a geophysical survey was undertaken by the West Yorkshire Archaeology Service, which confirmed the course of the road through Cow Roast, northwest of Berkhamsted.

The course of Akeman Street appears clearly and in addition, the locations of a variety of small roadside enclosures, possible structures, pits and wells were revealed (Fig. 2).
